Kajana lies a one hour flight south of Paramaribo, Surinam, surrounded by virgin Amazon rainforest. A small indiginous Saramaccan community, of which Jangjanman, the owner of Kosindo River Lodge is a member. Jangjanman supports the inhabitants with the revenues of his lodge and by employing them: guide, baker, cook, room maid. The small wooden cabins, workshops, a tiny shop, a little school, two Saramaccan sanctuaries, children playing, women carrying food and fruit and kitchenware on their heads. All so interesting and surrounded by the Amazon jungle, in which the inhabitants als have their vegetable gardens and fruit trees: cassava, bananas, mangoes etc. The incredible thing is the experience that you can walk around here on your own. The indigenous Saramaccans have totally adopted Kosindo lodge as part of their village and treat the tourists as their own guests, in an extremely friendly way. Many of them speak Dutch and all children do in any case, because it is taught in school.
