We stayed there for a month. It's an EXTREMELY quiet, slow and peaceful town.
If you want action and nightlife and "touristy" stuff ..... go elsewhere, you'll hate lovely Broken Hill. If you want personal safety, no rush, an amazing cultural diversity and history, a "mature" experience and a large country town with plenty of art, history, shopping, medical facilities and glorious buildings and houses from a bygone era ..... then you'll absolutely LOVE it here.
It's the most trouble free and non violent large town I have ever visited in Australia. It's just sooooooo peaceful and the people here are helpful and nice.
The surrounding countryside is diverse and contains everything from beautiful semi arid desert to the wonderful scenery and boating on the magnificent Menindee Lakes to the south. The Mad Max movies were made in Broken Hill.
The main street is historic and beautiful. There's a big shopping mall in the West part of town. Plenty of medical facilities.
